Many seem to have a problem with the actual foot washing in the communion service. They state it was example not a command. They state it was only among the Apostles. The state it was only men. They state this and they state that. The bottom line is Jesus himself said "If I then, Your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. I don't have a problem with the literal washing of feet because of the picture it shows just as I do not have a problem with recieving the emblems of bread and fruit of the vine because of the picture it communicates. Jesus said "Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye DO them" (John 13:16,17). Jesus said "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). Jesus said "Why call ye me, Lord, Lord and do not the things which I say" (Luke 6:46)?
I believe many fight this practice and concept because they are not in the place that Jesus was in or would have us to be in. Recall the Scripture text John 13:1-17. There are some things in place before Jesus washes the Disciples feet.
1. Jesus knew what time it was.
2. Jesus knew where he had come from and where he was going.
3. Jesus loved the Apostles unconditionally and eternally.
4. Jesus realized the enemy was not Judas but the devil that entered and influenced him.
5. Jesus Knew that the Father had given him all things and again where he came from and where he was going. He did not suffer from identity crisis or low self esteem or inferiority complex. He know who and whose he was.
6. Jesus knew how to rise from feeding himself to minister to someone else.
These 6 things outline where Jesus was and where he has called us to be before we can literally or figuratively take a towel and wash anyones feet.
Do we know what time it is? Do we actually know the day we are living in and our duty as it pertains to the day. Do we know that we are our heavenly fathers children and that we are seated together withhim in heavenly places in Christ Jesus? Do we understand our behavior ought to reflect our citizenship? Do we have unconditional love for people or do we love until people begin to act up. The Apostles did act up. They wanted to know who was the greatest, who would sit on the right and left of him. They wanted to call fire down on the samaritans. Do we love to the end? Do we realize who our enemy is and how and why he moves? Do we know all we have been afforded in the Holy Ghost. Do know how to deny ourselves to be a blessing to others.
We must be in this place or we will not see the need to wash anyones feet.
